Extremism and the Criminal Justice System

Judge Malcolm Simmons

“A truly thought-provoking and interactive seminar”

– Minister of Justice, Asia

I recently attended a conference in India at which the eminent Judge, Malcolm Simmons, gave a presentation on the spread of extremism and the challenges facing a criminal justice system that is already under significant strain.

An estimated 800 British citizens have travelled abroad to fight in Syria and Iraq, raising serious questions about how the justice system will cope with an influx of radicalised and potentially dangerous individuals.  As well as dealing with confirmed terror suspects, the police, court systems, prisons, probation service and youth offender organisations are well placed to spot the early signs of extremism among young people at risk of radicalisation.

This was an excellent presentation attended by senior members of regional ministries of justice, judges and prosecutors.
